The duo behind some of West Hollywood’s most popular – and long running – bars and restaurants Jared Meisler and Sean MacPherson, have opened chic bistro Barbette at Santa Monica Boulevard and Gardner right across the street from the new Salt’s Cure breakfast only spot.
What this location brings is authentic French meets California fare by Executive Chef Robert Flaherty who was last seen at Michelin-starred April Bloomfield’s The Spotted Pig and Breslin in New York. So far, we love the steak frites which you can order in a 6 or 8-ounce portion. The meat is perfectly pink in the center and every frites has just the right level of satisfyingly crispy bite. If you’re on a date with a carnivore this tender meat could be a good way to go. Other French classics include moules marinière and chicken diable made with Mary’s Organic Chicken. If you just want to nibble, try the chilled shrimp with fennel aioli or radish with butter. The warm sourdough bread is made in house and already so popular, they ran out on opening night. For a refreshing dessert twist, there is a cheese and crackers plate with Compte.
The intimate décor mirrors the Belle Epoch era with curved lines, oak paneling, sexy vintage mirrors, plush fabrics and a decadent tone to the marble bar area. Here is where you can pull up a stool and imbibe with award-winning bar tender Brittney Olsen’s creations. Standouts keeping the French-inspired theme include the Kir Royale, Champagne Cocktail, Bellini, French 76 and Death in the Afternoon which includes house-made Absinthe. Of course, there is a solid wine program by General Manager and Sommelier Jen Avina with French varietals from both California and France that are affordable – including a grenache Rosé from Provence for $10 per glass.
Like the team’s other local hotspots Jones, The Pikey, Bar Lubitsch and The Roger Room, we expect this cozy location to be thriving for years to come and one of the top dining and drinking dens in the city.
