Ready, Set, Summer Beauty

By Carole Dixon

It’s time for our favorite beauty trends, tips, new products and services to try out this summer to keep you looking your best at the beach and beyond.

EYELASHES

Just like avocado toast, the eyelash trend is not going away anytime soon.

If you want to have a glamorous set of lashes this summer that will stand the test of time in the pool or at the beach, book an appointment with master lash stylist Marc Christopher of Beauty Marcd - who trained at Xenon International and has been an artist for over 16 years. After working with top designers from William Rast to Rock and Republic, Marc still draws inspiration from leaders in the beauty industry from Francois Nars, Vincent Longo, and Scott Barnes.

If this is your first foray into the lash arena, Marc recommends doing a little research and taking a look at his work (beautymarcd.com) before you come in or even book the appointment. “What that means is how dramatic you want your lashes, how long you want them, cat eye, doe eye or natural which follows the flow of your natural growth. Drama in extensions comes more from the intensity rather than the length,” he says.

Marc also has a few tips and things that any glam- devotee should know for longer lasting wear:

-They are waterproof but not heatproof.
-The glue is oil based so the only thing that will break it down is oil.
-When properly cared for extensions can last up to 4 weeks easily.

Marc is based in Santa Monica but travels frequently for house calls and events in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Clients have included Minnie Driver, Rachel Ray, Paris Hilton, James King, Justin Timberlake, Drew Barrymore, Kim Kardashian, and Kate Beckinsale.

HAIR

We love Drybar on Sunset (and all the other locations when roaming around town), but we love them even more now that JNSQ Wines has been announced as the official wine partner at select Drybar locations throughout the country.

Next time you pop into Drybar for a blow-out, you will be presented with the option to sip JNSQ Rosé Cru or Sauvignon Blanc during your service. Additionally, clients are invited to add a little je ne sais quoi to their favorite style, and are given the choice of two signature JNSQ add-ons: a stylish braid for an additional $10, or the addition of a few rose gold pins at no additional cost.

We all know that summer months in the sun can lead to a dry scalp. Enter Taiwan which is becoming Asia’s best-kept secret for all that is beauty and hair care. We discovered the new SH_RD shampoo and conditioner at the celebrity hair hideaway with an amazing courtyard (also one of West Hollywood’s best-kept secrets), Ken Paves Salon and we are in love with both. SH-RD uses the power of rosemary and D-panthenol to effectively revitalize the hair and scalp. It combines the moisture and protection of silk amino acid and hydrolyzed silk proteins to smooth and seal the cuticle while locking in hydration and strengthening the hair-protecting the hair against damage caused by UV, Heat, Chlorine while promoting shine, bounce, and softness.

Phillip B. is also tackling this increasingly wide-spread issue with a new line to soothe your parched scalp and offers a few tips after you try the Anti-Flake Relief or Peppermint Avocado shampoo.

  • “Shampooing regularly – every 1-2 days – with a lightweight shampoo that contains healing botanicals like chlorophyll, sage, juniper and peppermint; soothing ingredients like aloe concentrate; and tea tree oil, which is naturally anti-microbial.”
  • “Look for treatment shampoos that contain pyrithione zinc (naturally anti-fungal and antimicrobial), selenium sulfide and coal tar, which are all geared towards scalp problems”
  • “Stay away from rich moisturizing shampoos – you don’t want to add more moisture to an oily scalp. And if your scalp is irritated, you should avoid heavily fragranced styling products, which can lead to more inflammation.”
  • “Lightly exfoliate- brush with a boar’s-hair bristle brush (it stimulates the scalp and helps move sebum down the hair shaft). But if your scalp is irritated, you don’t want to brush hard for fear of breaking pimples open (putting them at risk of infection) or creating more inflammation.

SKIN

You are what you eat so SHISEIDO Skincare recently launched their WASO line inspired by Japanese Superfoods. Exclusively available at a Sephora near you, these products harness the power of the holistic and natural Japanese food tradition of Washoku – or Japanese cuisine. WASO skincare uses the power of foods and botanicals known to promote beauty and health in Japan, unveiling skin’s most unique, natural beauty.

From a Color Smart Day Moisturizer to a Beauty Sleeping Mask, some of the ingredients in WASO (WA meaning harmony and SO meaning inspiration), include carrots, honey, tofu, yuzu, and red basil – good enough to eat, yet will keep your skin plump and lush on the side and stress-free on the outside.

MAKE-UP

Another neighborhood beauty store chain that we can’t get enough of, Bluemercury, has launched an essential Ready. Set. Summer. program in stores nationwide and online.

Bluemercury Beauty Experts will be standing by to educate customers on how they can incorporate the latest and greatest SPF, bronzers, and self-tanning products into their skincare and makeup routines to achieve their best glow, all while protecting their skin.

In addition, Bluemercury.com will be launching posts on How-to Self-Tan, All the Ways to Bronze, SPF Must-Haves and a Summer Skincare Update as part of this new Summer campaign. We are personally loving the M-61 PowerGlow® Peel Gradual Tan Pad which is an updated take on the brand’s best-selling PowerGlow® Peel. This 1-minute, 1-step, gradual tan facial pad is formulated with glycolic and salicylic acid to exfoliate, resurface and firm while building a streak-free, natural tan, and overall radiant glow. At-home tanning just got a lot easier.

Plus, the Lune+Aster Fabulous in Five! Make up set is perfect for summer travel, featuring an assortment of top-selling vegan and gluten-free beauty essentials to create an effortlessly perfect look in under five minutes. (a $240 value for $98).

Check them out in West Hollywood: 8500 Melrose Avenue, Suite 108 or SUNSET PLAZA 8604 Sunset Boulevard

BODY

Just eat healthier and exercise, OK? Seriously, we think you should jump into the boxing ring at New York celebrity favorite Dogpound for a summer-bod workout. This new high-tech and futuristic looking gym just opened in West Hollywood on Robertson.

When you’re done sweating it out, add a spritz of refreshing VAYU Illuminating Toning Mist from Taïla – a beautiful blend of rose, cucumber, and Tulsi to protect and hydrate the skin on those hot summer days. This scented mist is also the perfect potion to hydrate and combat post-flight dryness or for a day spent in the sun, leaving your skin refreshed, revitalized and radiant. Tulsi (holy basil) helps to protect skin against environmental stressors while giving your immune system a boost, cucumber deeply hydrates and soothes while rose innately works to maintain skin’s pH balance and reduce excess sebum production, so we say spray to on your entire body and don’t forget to hydrate from within with our new favorite Proud Source Spring Water in handy small or large metal bottles.
