Exquisite Custom-Made Wearable Art Was Inspired By The Red Aids Ribbon, The Universal Symbol Of Awareness And Support For Those Living With Hiv
This Saturday, June 27, the internationally renowned, New York/L.A.-based artist Yozmit will perform a meditational walk in West Hollywood from 3-6PM in remembrance of all those lost to AIDS. Yozmit’s site-specific performance installation will take place throughout WeHo’s Plummer Park, which was the host location of weekly ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) meetings during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s. The spectacular hand-crafted outfit Yozmit will wear was inspired by the red AIDS ribbon, the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. The event is in association with the One City One Pride Day of Theatre, and is a highlight of the City of West Hollywood’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival. Admission is free, and free parking is available. For more information on the ongoing Festival and other Day of Theatre programming: www.weho.org/pride.
Through ritualistic performance art, Yozmit combines theater, dance, pop culture, fashion, gender identity, mythology, and shamanism onto a single canvas. Her self-given name Yozmit means “bringing out the big ‘I’ within,” or the “myth about one’s self.” She sees her art as a form of research that helps define the unknown mysteries of her universe. Yozmit has performed extensively around the world, including in New York City in 2010 as part of Marina Abramovic’s “The Artist is Present” at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In addition to his work as an artist, Yozmit is a zen practioner and an activist for HIV/AIDS prevention and transgender civil rights (Yozmit uses both “she” and “he” pronouns in descriptions).
The City of West Hollywood celebrates June Pride month annually by recognizing the artistic achievements of its community with the One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival. This year’s Festival coincides with West Hollywood’s 30th anniversary of Cityhood, spotlighting the impact of AIDS on art and culture with the theme “WeHo@30: Art AIDS WeHo.” It encompasses diverse exhibitions, programming, performances, screenings, installations, and events through early September.
