If ever there was an iconic casual restaurant on Sunset Boulevard, it was the Old World Restaurant, which was really more of a coffee shop. Situated on the corner curve of Holloway, now occupied by State Social House pub, the bell-bottomed foot traffic in the 1970s to and from the slightly gritty counter included a who’s who of screenwriters, actors and musicians—and some of them were even your waiters and waitresses at some point.
Another cool spot to score a cup of Joe in the area was at the 24-hour Ben Frank’s diner, which is now the retro Mel’s Drive-In—so, a similar comfort-food-and-coffee vibe remains—which is still just what the doctor ordered for a midnight snack after a concert at The Whiskey or Roxy.
