City of West Hollywood Commemorates Transgender Awareness Month; City Hall Lighting Ceremony, November 1
The City of West Hollywood’s Transgender Advisory Board and members of the West Hollywood City Council will host a short ceremony to light West Hollywood City Hall in the colors of the transgender flag on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at 6 p.m. at West Hollywood City Hall, located at 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard.
The event is free and open to the public. A dessert reception will follow in City Hall.
West Hollywood City Hall will remain lit in blue, pink, and white lights for the duration of November, in observance of Transgender Awareness Month.

Sense of Place Migratory Sculpture Moves to New Locations from November 1 through 15
Sense of Place, an eight-foot square cube comprised of 40 unique concrete forms that fit together like a puzzle, was designed by Guadalajara-based artist Jose Dávila to be disassembled and reinstalled in locations all over the greater Los Angeles area in three migratory movements.
The first of these movements will commence between Wednesday, November 1, 2017 and Wednesday, November 15, 2017.
The piece, which is presented as part of “WeHo Artes,” the City of West Hollywood’s special thematic programming that celebrates The Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA,” will be de-installed in segments of 10 to 15 pieces and moved from its current location at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard, to several locations, including Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard; the Brand Library and Art Center, 1601 W. Mountain Street, in Glendale; Grand Central Market, 317 S. Broadway, in Los Angeles; Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant, 704 S. Alvarado Street, in Los Angeles; and the Santa Monica Pier, in Santa Monica.
The second group of pieces will move again in January 2018. The final group will move in March 2018 to locations across the Los Angeles region (to be announced). In April 2018, all 40 pieces will return to West Hollywood Park, where it will be reassembled in its cube form.
“Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA” is an exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, and will take place through January 2018 across Southern California.

“Too Toxic to Trash” Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection in Culver City, November 4
The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County will host a “Too Toxic to Trash” Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste collection event on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Los Angeles College, located 4800 Freshman Drive in Culver City, in parking lot 7.
All residents of Los Angeles County may dispose of household hazardous waste such as brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, cleaners with acid or lye, pesticides or herbicides, household batteries, car batteries, pool chemicals, motor oil, oil filters, expired pharmaceuticals, anti-freeze, and fluorescent light bulbs. Residents may bring household electronic waste such as computer monitors, televisions, computer CPUs, keyboards, printers, cell phones and tablets. Home-generated sharps waste such as hypodermic needles, syringes, intravenous needles, and lancets may also be brought to the collection.
Waste from businesses, explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, trash, tires, large appliances such as refrigerators and stoves, and controlled substances will not be accepted.
People who wish to participate in the collection should bring the items in a sturdy box and preferably in their original labeled containers. Please do not mix items, and be prepared to leave your containers and boxes. There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.

Junk in the Trunk Rummage Sale, November 4
The City of West Hollywood’s Recreation Services Division will host a Junk in the Trunkrummage sale on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in the North parking lot, near the intersection of Fountain Avenue and Vista Street.
Anyone who has yard sale items to sell is invited to register to participate in the event — no vendor goods will be permitted. Items can be displayed from car trunks and hatches, or in a parking sale space using a tarp or table. Sellers are welcomed use one pop-up tent or a canopy in their assigned space, but those must not be bigger than 10’x10’. Participants may start setting up at 8 a.m. Cars will not be allowed to enter the lot after 9 a.m. Parking sale spaces, which cover two standard parking spots, are available for $15 and must be reserved in advance. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free for shoppers.

Free Flu Shots at West Hollywood Library, November 4
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the County of Los Angeles Public Library have partnered to provide flu vaccines at no charge. Free flu shots will be given to anyone who doesn’t have health insurance or whose healtchare provider doesn’t offer flu vaccines on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone six months of age and older, including healthy adults. Those with severe egg allergies or who are sick during the day of the clinic should check with their doctor before getting vaccinated.

National Novel Writing Month Write-Ins, Tuesdays in November
November is National Novel Writing Month, and the West Hollywood Library is participating by hosting write-in sessions on Tuesdays in November 2017 (November 7, 14, 21 and 28) from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the library’s West Hollywood Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

The City of West Hollywood’s Public Safety Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Los Angeles Cyber Division present a workshop regarding cyber safety. At this workshop, designed for community members in the City of West Hollywood, Michael C. L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Safe Drug Drop-Off Program, November 8
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has begun a monthly Safe Drug Drop Offprogram, which provides the community with an opportunity to safely and anonymously surrender any left-over, unused or expired prescriptions or any other controlled substances.
The program begins on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, located at 780 N. San Vicente Boulevard, and continues every first Wednesday of the month until further notice.
Sheriff’s deputies will be on hand to collect the unwanted drugs with no questions asked. The deputies will accept prescription medications, illegal drugs, hormone replacement drugs, veterinary medicines, codeine, phenobarbital, anabolic steroids, narcotics, tranquilizers, etc. The program is for members of the community and is not intended for commercial purposes.

Bike Light Giveaway, November 8
With Daylight Savings Time coming to an end, nightfall will come earlier, and it is important that cyclists are well lit so that motorists can see them. To encourage safe cycling, the City of West Hollywood will host a Bike Light Giveaway on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Santa Monica and San Vicente Boulevards. Members of the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, the City’s Public Safety Commission, the City’s Transportation Commission, and Block by Block Bicycle Ambassadors will join City staff in helping bicyclists light the way during nighttime riding with free bike lights.
The free bicycle lights will be given to riders who have their bikes with them, and while supplies last. Information about cycling in the City of West Hollywood will also be available.

Incident at Oglala: The Leonard Peltier Story Documentary Screening, November 8
The West Hollywood Library hosts a screening of the documentary film Incident at Oglala: The Leonard Peltier Story on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Directed by Michael Apted and released in 1992, the film examines the 1975 incident where armed FBI agents illegally entered the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which led to the deaths of a Native American and two FBI agents, and explores the controversy surrounding Leonard Peltier, who was the sole person in the incident convicted of murder.

Transgender Job Fair, November 9
The City of West Hollywood, in conjunction with the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project (TEEP), hosts a Transgender Job Fair on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the West Hollywood Park Auditorium, located at 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
More than 54 companies and businesses will participate in the job fair, and the event will include job training resources and a panel of employment experts featuring transgender entrepreneur Michaela Mendelsohn.

City of West Hollywood Veterans Day Ceremony, November 11
The City of West Hollywood will honor veterans and active members of the United States Armed Forces during its annual Veterans Day Program on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Sal Guarriello Veterans’ Memorial, located on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Holloway Drive.
Members of the community are invited to join City officials, City staff members, and representatives from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station and the Los Angeles County Fire Department in honoring our local veterans.
This year’s theme is “Transgender Individuals in the Military.” During the program, members of the West Hollywood City Council will recognize those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Representatives from local veterans organizations and the UCLA ROTC Air Force Color Guard will participate. Marsha Evelyn Morgan will speak in support of transgender individuals in the military. Morgan served in the U.S. Navy for six years, including two six-month deployments to the Persian Gulf for Desert Storm and Desert Shield, attained the Rank of E6, and served on the Nuclear-Powered Fast-Attack Submarine USS Topeka SSN754 as a Sonar Technician.
The event is free and open to the public. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to West Hollywood City Hall.

Fiksi Interactive Theatrical Performance for Children, November 12
Fiski, an interactive theatrical performance for children, sponsored in part by the City of West Hollywood’s Russian Advisory Board, will take place on Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Fiesta Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard.
Fiksies are characters from a famous story by Russian children’s author Edward Uspenskiy. They rule the world of mechanisms, and live next to humans as warranty people. Fiksies, who are invisible to people, are sent from factories along with the devices, repairing minor breakages, and once the warranty period expires, they return to the factory in order to work for a new device.
In this performance, actors portray Fiksies, who will engage children from the audience in discussions and games, and teach them how to be a Fiksi. The performance is in Russian; however, non-Russian speakers will be able to follow along.

City’s WeHo Reads Series Presents Chris Kraus in Conversation with Kim Dower, November 14
The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Reads series presents Guggenheim Fellow and acclaimed author Chris Kraus in conversation with West Hollywood City Poet Laureate Kim Dower on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Kraus, author of the best-selling novel I Love Dick, which has been adapted into a television series starring Kevin Bacon on Amazon Video, and a new biography After Kathy Acker, joins Dower to discuss the influence poetry has had on her work. This intimate, candid conversation will offer insights for readers and writers alike. Guests are encouraged to bring their most soul-searching questions for the Q&A session.

The City of West Hollywood and its Russian Advisory Board, each month, host the Recreation Club “Time Presses,” a Wednesday-Night Social Club. The City of West Hollywood’s Gay Men’s Discussion Group, TRIBE, will take place on Wednesday, November 17, 2017 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
TRIBE meets on the third Wednesday of every month. Screening of Los Olvidados and Artists’ Talk with Ramiro Gomez and David Feldman, November 15
The City of West Hollywood presents a screening of the award-winning short film Los Olvidados, followed by an artists’ talk with Ramiro Gomez and David Feldman, on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. Presented as part of “WeHo Artes,” the City of West Hollywood’s special thematic programming that celebrates the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA,” and in conjunction with the In West Hollywood exhibition, featuring works by Gomez and Feldman, Los Olvidados means “the forgotten” in Spanish. Directed by Feldman, the film tells the story of Gomez’s artistic process and chronicles his installation of a work in the Sonoran Desert as a powerful statement on immigration.

Unity in Diversity Arts Foundation presents Colibri, the 10th Annual International Instrumental and Vocal Music Competition for Young Performers, November 18 and 19; and December 2 and 3
Unity in Diversity Arts Foundation, with support from the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program, will present Colibri, the 10th Annual International Music Competition for Young Performers.
The instrumental competition will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2017 and Sunday, November 19, 2017, and the vocal competition will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 and Sunday, December 3, 2017. The competition begins at 11 a.m. each day at Plummer Park’s Fiesta Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard.
The Colibri (or “Hummingbird” in English) competition promotes integration of all cultures, increases mutual understanding, and creates a favorable platform for the youth movement throughout the world. Children from all over California will take part in the competition. This year, the event will be celebrating its 8th anniversary. This annual gathering of talented children has become very popular among young performers. The event will also feature winners of the previous competition.

Court Appointed Special Advocates Volunteer Info Session, November 18
The West Hollywood Library hosts an information session for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
CASA Volunteers are trained and appointed by a judge to advocate on behalf of a foster child in the courtroom and within the community. The session will cover how CASA volunteers make a difference in the lives of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Transgender Wellness & Wellbeing Conference, November 18
The 2017 Transgender Wellness & Wellbeing Conference, which is co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood through its Transgender Advisory Board, will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at LAC + USC Medical Center, located at 1200 N. State Street, in Los Angeles.
Workshops will include such topics as physical wellbeing, emotional wellness, prosperity wellbeing and creative wellness. Lunch and a gift bag will be provided to all attendees.

Join Team West Hollywood for United Way’s HomeWalk, November 18
The City of West Hollywood will participate in the United Way’s 11th annual HomeWalk, an event that raises funds and awareness with the ultimate goal of ending homelessness in Los Angeles County.
Team West Hollywood and other participants in will gather on Saturday, November 18, 2017, beginning at 7 a.m., at Grand Park, located near Los Angeles City Hall at 200 N. Grand Avenue, in Downtown Los Angeles.

Staged Reading of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, November 18
The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program presents Classical Theatre Lab’s staged reading of Shakespeare’s sonnets, as part of the City’s Free Theatre in the Parks program on Saturday, November 14, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Shakespeare’s sonnets are the most enduring love poems in English literature. This staged and annotated reading, directed by Roderick Menzies, explores the passion of the poet, his young friend, and the dark lady; examines the poet’s struggles to see beyond appearances; and agonizes with him as he realizes that appearance and reality may be drastically different.

WeHo Pedals Bike Share Basics Class, November 19
The City of West Hollywood will host a WeHo Pedals Bike Share Basics class on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Plummer Park WeHo Pedals Bike Share Hub, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection of Martel Avenue.
The class will offer a hands-on experience that aims to educate and encourage community members to use the WeHo Pedals system as informed, safe, and lawful cyclists. Two instructors, designated by Sustainable Streets, will lead the class in practicing safe riding skills and learning how to use all of the features of a WeHo Pedals bike share bicycle. Participants will also learn West Hollywood’s local bicycle laws.
Participation in the class is free and space is limited to 15 participants. Unfortunately, walk-up participants cannot be accommodated; advance reservations are required. All participants will receive a free helmet.

The City of West Hollywood hosts a Conversation with Simon Doonan about the late artist Mundo Meza, who is the focal point of the group exhibition Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. The Conversation will take place on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 3 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Presented as part of “WeHo Artes,” the City of West Hollywood’s special thematic programming that celebrates the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA,” Doonan, who collaborated with Meza on provocative window displays at West Hollywood boutiques, will discuss the intersection of art, fashion, and club cultures in the 1980s.
Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. is organized by the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives Gallery at the USC Libraries, and is on view at ONE Gallery, West Hollywood, located at 9007 Melrose Avenue; and at the MOCA Pacific Design Center (Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles), located at 8687 Melrose Avenue, through Sunday, December 31, 2017.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony, November 20
The City of West Hollywood’s Transgender Advisory Board will host a Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony on Monday, November 20, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Center for Early Education, located at 563 N. Alfred Street.
The event will include speakers from the community, City representatives, and transgender performers. The names of transgender people who have passed due to hate crimes will be read aloud at the ceremony. The flag at West Hollywood City Hall will be flown at half-staff in remembrance. A march will immediately follow the event.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Limited free parking is available onsite.

Small Business Saturday, November 25
Residents and visitors in the City of West Hollywood are encouraged to support local merchants during Small Business Saturday, which will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017. Stores throughout the City will offer promotions and activities.
Small Business Saturday is the day we celebrate the Shop Small movement to help connect shoppers to local merchants throughout West Hollywood. This annual event has grown since 2010 and occurs each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving Day.
As a special addition to Small Business Saturday in the City of West Hollywood this year, Stars Shop Small for WeHo, and participating retailers will be making donations to Stories: The AIDS Monument, which will be installed at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. Walt & El Grupo Documentary Screening, November 29
The City of West Hollywood hosts a screening of the feature-length documentary, Walt & El Grupo, followed by a Q&A with director Ted Thomas, on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.
Presented as part of the City’s “WeHo Artes” special thematic programing that celebrates the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, the film chronicles the 10-week trip that Walt Disney and his hand-picked group of artists and filmmakers took to South America in 1941 at the behest of the U.S. Government as part of the Good Neighbor Policy.
The screening is presented in conjunction with the How to Read El Pato Pascual: Disney’s Latin America and Latin America’s Disney, which is on view through January 14, 2018 at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, located at 835 N.
