Nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter, Los Angeles native, and Amherst College student Nina Shallman returns to The Mint on Saturday, August 22 for a 7:30PM all-ages early show. It is Nina’s third time appearing at the Los Angeles venue, and the date also previews and celebrates her self-titled debut album, which is scheduled for release on August 28. Nina will perform with her band, including Aaron Blick (double bass), Rob Humphreys (drums), Dan Kalisher (guitar), and Nomi Abadi (keyboards, background vocals).
Nina’s two previous engagements at The Mint sold out. In an LA Weekly Critic’s Pick advance piece for her first show there in January, Falling James wrote, “Nina Shallman has such a lovely voice, it almost doesn’t matter what she’s singing… Shallman makes such small romantic details feel sumptuous and grand with the help of producer Andrew Williams. On ballads such as “The Moon Can Stay,” she breaks hearts with little more than sparse piano accents, the faraway swoon of violins and her wistfully ethereal vocals.”
Williams—formerly of The Williams Brothers, and producer for artists including Peter Case, Victoria Williams, and Five for Fighting—has worked with Nina since 2013, and produced the forthcoming release Nina Shallman. The album features mostly original songs—including “Arms,” “Daisies,” and “The Moon Can Stay,” and covers of Lennon & McCartney’s “Dear Prudence” and The Smiths’ “Ask.”
Another track on the album, “Never Years Old,” is a duet and co-write with singer-songwriter Jacob Snider that is receiving public radio airplay. Preview it here: https://soundcloud.com/user299120850/never-years-old-nina-shallman-and-jacob-snider. Snider will perform it with Nina at The Mint on August 22.
L.A.-based music journalist Steve Hochman writes, “She infuses both old and new songs with her own perspectives and poetry seemingly well beyond her years. And yet, the playfulness and bracing sense of discovery that marks the spirit she shares with her band bears the unmistakable spark of youth.”
