Who says being single isn’t sexy? National Singles Day, a day celebrating singles and single lifestyles, is on its way to becoming as well-known around the country as Valentine’s Day.

In the United States, singles account for close to 50% of the adult population according to the US Census Bureau – plenty enough to qualify for their own day of recognition! And where better to generate the National Singles Day buzz than West Hollywood, California, known for its culture, diversity and thriving singles nightlife.
Started in 2013 by Karen Reed, West Hollywood resident and business owner, National Singles Day is celebrated on January 11th (1.11), inspired by the Chinese holiday of the same name, celebrated on November 11th (11.11). Singles Day in China has become the biggest retail sales day in the world since being partnered with the e-commerce giant, Alibaba, more than doubling Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
Singles Day China generated $14.3 billion this year, beating it’s 2014 record of $9.3 billion by a whopping 60%.
Reed’s vision with National Singles Day USA is to replace outdated stereotypes with a new attitude of acceptance and celebration of singles and single lifestyles combined with Singles Day retail specials and discounts. The January date was chosen to position National Singles Day after our traditional end of year holidays, kicking off the New Year with an upbeat holiday for consumers and a Q1 sales opportunity for merchants.
“Singles are an integral part of our socio-economic DNA and yet their contribution continues to be overlooked and undervalued,” says Reed, adding that singles in the US are our largest “invisible” demographic. “It’s time we started seeing singles as a viable segment of society and not just a random group of people who haven’t become couples yet. National Singles Day is a great way to begin turning the tide.”
Co-sponsors already on board are Bar10 West Hollywood, which will host the 2016 festivities, West Hollywood Lifestyle magazine and Single & Looking Apparel Co.™, providing single-centric holiday t-shirts and swag. Single Star Awards will be presented to individuals and organizations who have raised the profile of singles in the media or through positive public awareness. Featured giveaways and premium raffle items will also be part of the festivities.
