This summer, the West Hollywood Design District gets a chic community-knit boutique hotel from architect Gulla Jónsdóttir.
Jónsdóttir was only 19 when she moved from Iceland to Los Angeles to study architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 1989. After graduating, she earned her chops at the architectural firm Richard Meier (having turned down a job offer from Frank Gehry) working on the Getty Center Museum followed by a quick stint working at Disney Imagineering creating rides for Tokyo DisneySea. After that, she ran Dodd Mitchell Design for a few years, where she oversaw renovations on Hollywood’s legendary Roosevelt Hotel, before starting her own company in 2009.
